Patrolling waters worldwide, the U.S. Navy’s submarine force keeps our nation and every one of our citizens safe. Named after the state of Washington, the USS Washington, a Virginia-class attack submarine, joined the fleet on 7 October, 2017. It is a nuclear powered, fast attack submarine designed to operate in shallow coastal regions while maintaining the capacity for open ocean submarine warfare.
The USS Washington (SSN-787) was commissioned on October 7 2017 at 11:00 EDT at Naval Station Norfolk. A recording of the event is available here.
